Effects of Space Flight on Inflammasome Activation in the Brain of Mice.
In a recent study led by researchers from NASA's Rodent Research program abo0ard the International Space Station (ISS), scientists investigated how living in space affects mice brains, specifically looking at inflammation. Inflammation is our body’s natural response to injury or illness but can become harmful if it goes on for too long without healing properly - and this study aimed to understand what happens when the usual Earth environment changes drastically in space. The researchers sent 60 mice, called C57BL/6 mice (a common type of mouse used in scientific studies), into space aboard a SpaceX cargo ship for about three weeks - that's almost two months! Once they were on the ISS and after their stay there, scientists examined how these brave little astronaut-mice fared.
In the study titled "Inflammasome Activation in Mice Housed on the International Space Station," researchers sought to understand how prolonged space flight affects immune responses, specifically inflammasome activation within mouse brains. The experiment was conducted aboard NASA's Rodent Research 1 Mission during a six-day stay at the ISS from September 21st to October 25th, 2014. The methodology involved sending C57BL/6 mice on this spaceflight and subsequently analyzing their brain tissue for inflammasome activation levels after exposure to a microgravity environment of approximately three weeks (37 days). The researchers used the SpaceX-4 cargo vehicle, Dragon, as part of NASA's collaboration with commercial partners. Key findings from this study indicated that mice housed in space exhibited significant inflammasome activation within their brains compared to control groups on Earth. This suggests a potential link between microgravity exposure and immune dysregulation which could have implications for astronaut health during long-duration missions, as well as upon return to Earth's gravity.
