In a recent study conducted on mice, scientists found that stem cells taken from mouse bone marrow and grown under conditions of microgravity (like those experienced by astronauts in space) showed unique properties. These specialized cells had higher levels of genes linked to brain development and nerve function compared to the same type of cells when they were grown on Earth with normal gravity. The exciting part is that these stem cells, which can become any cell needed for repair or regeneration in our bodies (like neurons), seemed to help mice recover better from acute brain injuries than regular ones did. This suggests the potential of using such space-grown stem cells as a treatment option here on Earth when dealing with similar types of damage, like strokes or traumatic injuries that affect nerve function in our bodies. However, before we can use these specialized cell treatments for humans safely and effectively (a process known as "cell therapy"), more research is needed to understand their unique properties better.
In this research paper, an experiment titled "Stroma-2" was conducted aboard the International Space Station (ISS) with a focus on mouse bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). The study aimed to investigate whether MSC cultured in microgravity conditions exhibit distinct properties that could be beneficial for therapeutic applications, particularly concerning neural development and injury recovery. Methodology: The experiment involved growing mouse bone marrow-derived MSCs under two different gravity environments - normal Earth gravity (1g) and simulated microgravity conditions aboard the ISS. The cells were then analyzed for gene expression related to neural development, neuron morphogenesis, nerve impulse transmission, anti-inflammatory factors, and apoptotic inhibitors using molecular techniques such as qPCR or RNA sequencing.
