This research is about studying bacteria called Klebsiella that can cause infections, especially a type known as hypervirulent K. pneumoniae or hvKP. These germs are becoming more dangerous because they're getting resistant to antibiotics and causing serious illnesses even among healthy people when exposed during space missions like the International Space Station (ISS). Scientists wanted to understand how these bacteria behave in space, so they collected samples from different spots on the ISS using special wipes. They then studied their genetic material and looked for things that make them resistant or harmful - this includes antibiotic resistance, ability to survive high temperatures (thermotolerance), tolerating heavy metals like lead, and carrying extra DNA pieces called mobile genetic elements which can spread these traits.
This research communication presents comprehensive genomic analyses of ten Klebsiella strains isolated from the International Space Station (ISS). The study aimed to understand these organisms' antimicrobial resistance, virulence factors, thermotolerance capabilities, heavy metal resistance mechanisms, and mobilome elements. Methodologically, complete genomes were generated for each strain using next-genereneration sequencing (NGS). Circular chromosomal maps of the Klebsiella isolates from ISS were constructed to provide a detailed genetic overview that facilitates further comparative analyses. The study also employed large-scale population genomics approaches, which included whole-genome resequencing and phylogenetic analysis based on single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the isolates' core chromosomal regions to trace their evolutionary paths back to Earth strains.
