This study looked at how clean our water systems are, specifically in a place called Waste Reclamation System (WRS). Scientists found that even though there were safety measures to keep things safe from harmful substances like phosphoric acid and hexavalent chromium when they're mixed with urine before it goes through the system, some areas still needed better monitoring. To learn more about what was in our water systems without having access for regular checks, researchers took two flexible lines that had been taken out of a part called Urine Processor Assembly (UPA) back to Earth and studied them carefully. They found tiny organisms like bacteria named Burkholderia, Paraburkholderia, and Leifsonia in the water from these lines as well as some fungi known as Fusarium that can sometimes cause problems for people's health if they get into our drinking or bathing waters. This discovery is important because it tells us we need to keep a closer eye on where harmful microbes might be hiding in places like the WRS, especially during times when parts of these systems are being fixed up and not regularly checked for safety reasons.
This research paper presents a comprehensive microbial evaluation conducted on water samples from within two removed flex lines in the Waste Recirculation System (WRS) of the International Space Station. The study aimed to identify potential risks associated with refurbishment activities and assess possible contamination sources, particularly focusing on Burkholderia , Paraburkholderia , Leifsonia spp., Fusarium spp., as well as phosphoric acid/hexavalent chromium urine pretreatment solutions. Methodology: The researchers employed both culture-dependent and independent methods to analyze the microbial content of water samples from within the removed flex lines, along with flush water collected during refurbishment activities in WRS. Culture-dependent analysis involved cultivating bacteria on selective media for Burkholderia , Paraburkholderia , Leifsonia spp., and Fusarium spp.
